Deadwood Removal and Structural Pruning of a Mature Crape Myrtle in Chesterfield, VA
Situation
Select Tree Removal was contacted by a homeowner in central Chesterfield, VA to remove deadwood from a mature crape myrtle during the summer growing season.
The approximately 30-foot tree had several mature, upright stems and a dense canopy containing multiple dead and declining limbs. Some of the deadwood was positioned toward the house, while a central leader had died and was rubbing against several surrounding vertical stems.
The homeowner wanted the deadwood addressed while avoiding unnecessary removal of healthy growth during the middle of summer.

Challenge
Several dead and declining limbs were positioned within the canopy and required careful removal to avoid damaging the surrounding live branches and stems.
The most difficult section was a dead central leader located in the middle of several closely spaced vertical trunks. Because there was very little room to access the stem from the outside of the canopy, removing it without contacting the surrounding healthy stems required careful positioning and controlled bore cutting with a chainsaw.
Summer pruning calls for restraint
Crape myrtles can tolerate appropriate summer pruning, but removing substantial amounts of live wood during periods of heat can place additional stress on an established tree. The goal was therefore to remove the dead and hazardous material while preserving as much healthy canopy as possible.
Solution
Select Tree Removal focused the work on deadwood removal and targeted structural clearance rather than extensive live-wood pruning.
The dead central leader was carefully removed from within the canopy while avoiding the surrounding healthy stems. Other dead limbs were removed individually and controlled during their descent to prevent them from becoming caught in the canopy or falling toward the house.
Particular attention was given to limbs that could contact the house while leaving healthy, living branches in place wherever possible.
Result
The dead and declining wood was removed from the mature crape myrtle, eliminating the immediate deadwood hazards and providing additional clearance around the house.
Because the tree was actively growing and the work was performed during summer, we also discussed returning during the dormant season to evaluate the remaining structure and determine whether additional selective pruning would be appropriate.
This approach allowed the immediate deadwood concerns to be addressed without unnecessarily removing healthy live growth during the summer.
