Firewood Salvage & Splitting from an Old Log Pile in Richmond, VA
Situation
Select Tree Removal LLC was contacted by a homeowner in a neighborhood of Richmond, south of the James River, near Huguenot Flatwater, who had inherited a large pile of logs when purchasing the property. The logs had been sitting outdoors for several years beneath an old tarp that had deteriorated and was no longer providing effective protection from rain and moisture.
Although much of the pile had begun to decay, several logs still contained usable wood that could be salvaged and split for firewood.
Choose Quality Plastic Sheeting Over Cheap Tarps
For the best protection, we recommend covering your wood with heavy-duty plastic sheeting instead of low-quality tarps. While cheap tarps often deteriorate in a single season, a high-quality plastic sheet can last for several years.
Pro-Tip for Maximum Longevity:
To prevent harsh UV rays from breaking down the material, simply remove the plastic sheeting each summer. Taking this quick step will significantly extend its lifespan and keep your wood protected year after year.

Challenge
The main challenge was determining whether enough sound wood remained to make splitting worthwhile. Logs resting directly on the ground had largely rotted, while moisture trapped beneath the deteriorating tarp had contributed to further decay throughout the pile.
Because the firewood was intended for use in an indoor fireplace, selecting sound, suitable wood was especially important. The logs also varied in length and needed to be cut to consistent, manageable sizes before splitting. Our main task would be to rummage through the log pile to hand-select the best logs for cutting and splitting.

Solution
Select Tree Removal worked through the pile to identify logs with the greatest amount of solid, usable wood, prioritizing sound heartwood where possible and leaving heavily deteriorated material behind. I cut the salvageable logs to standard firewood lengths of approximately 16–18 inches before splitting them.
Since the job was billed hourly, I focused the available time on recovering the best material rather than spending unnecessary time processing wood that was too decayed to be worthwhile.
Firewood processing is offered by Select Tree Removal on an hourly basis, allowing the homeowner to choose how much work is completed during each visit. Once a job is complete, the homeowner could continue splitting the remaining material independently or have Select Tree Removal return to complete additional processing.

Result
After approximately three hours of cutting and splitting, the homeowner had a substantial pile of usable firewood ready to stack. Prioritizing the soundest logs helped maximize the value of the service while reducing the amount of material that would ultimately need to be hauled away.
Salvaging usable wood can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a new cord of firewood, particularly when an old log pile already needs to be removed. The homeowner planned to stack the split wood and sort through the remaining pile for any additional pieces worth saving before a possible return visit.
