Hazardous Declining Sweetgum Removal in a Confined Backyard in Harper's Mill, Chesterfield County, VA
Situation
Select Tree Removal encountered a 50-foot sweetgum in a residential backyard in Harper's Mill that was showing significant decline from the top down, as it happens when trees lose the ability to send sufficient nutrients to the top. The tree was growing in a confined space between a mature white oak and a neighboring backyard fence.
The sweetgum had developed a pronounced lean toward the fence, leaving a narrow area available for the tree to be safely felled. Because of its declining condition and the limited drop zone, the removal required careful planning and precise control.

Challenge
The sweetgum contained several dead branches, or "widow-makers", high in the canopy, increasing the hazards associated with the removal.
Its lean toward the neighboring fence created another challenge: the tree needed to be directed away from the fence while also clearing the canopy of the much larger white oak. Allowing the sweetgum to contact the oak could have caused damage or resulted in the tree becoming hung up during the fall.
Nearby garden beds also needed to remain undisturbed.
Benefits to early removal
Choosing to remove this tree before it fully died was the best course of action. That allowed for a more controlled and predictable removal. Waiting several more years could have increased both the complexity and cost of the job as decay progressed. In many cases, removing dead or declining trees early is the safest and most economical way to protect your home and property.

Solution
Select Tree Removal established a controlled directional-felling plan designed to guide the sweetgum into the narrow available drop zone.
A pull line was installed high in the tree and connected to a Maasdam rope puller anchored to a nearby tree, using a tree saver strap for protection, along the intended direction of fall. After establishing the directional face cut, controlled tension was applied to the pull line to help overcome the tree's existing lean and maintain control of its movement.
Because of the tree's declining condition and the presence of dead branches in the canopy, the felling operation was planned to minimize unnecessary movement and maintain control of the tree throughout the fall.

Result
The pull line tipped the sweetgum into the intended drop zone. The tree cleared the mature white oak and neighboring fence without causing damage, while the nearby garden beds were left undisturbed.
Once safely on the ground, the sweetgum was cut into longer logs rather than conventional firewood lengths. Sweetgum can be particularly difficult to split by hand, so we chose to retain the larger sections for potential milling into slabs.
The remaining debris was removed from the property and the work area was cleaned up.
Project highlights:
Approximately 50-foot declining sweetgum
Hazardous dead branches in the upper canopy
Significant lean toward neighboring property
Confined drop zone between mature trees and fence
Controlled directional felling
Mature white oak and fence protected
Garden beds left undisturbed
Logs retained for potential milling
Debris removed and site cleaned up
Every tree removal project begins with evaluating the safest approach based on the tree's condition, lean, surrounding obstacles, and available landing zones. Careful planning helps minimize risk and protect your property throughout the removal process.
