Selective Removal of Eight Dead and Declining Trees in Powhatan, VA
Situation
Select Tree Removal was contacted by a homeowner in Powhatan, VA who wanted to remove several smaller, dead and declining trees around her rural property.
A number of the trees were growing close to the driveway and shed, and the homeowner was concerned about the amount of standing deadwood along the periphery of her property and the potential for injury, obstruction or property damage. Our goal was to thin the hazard trees around her property to ease the homeowner's mind and provide a prettier landscape for her to enjoy.
Challenge
There were eight smaller trees requiring removal, ranging from approximately 20 to 30 feet tall.
Several trees were positioned close to the shed and needed to be directed away from the structure. The remaining trees were located near the driveway and within an existing mature canopy, requiring careful planning to prevent them from becoming hung up or causing unnecessary damage as they came down since dead trees can be very brittle.
The condition of the trees added another consideration. Most were dead or significantly declining, so the removal required care to keep the trees and their limbs under control as they were brought down.
Solution
The trees surrounding the shed were addressed first because of their proximity to the structure. Each was evaluated individually, with lower limbs removed and weight reduced where necessary to improve control and direct the trees away from the shed.
The remaining trees along the driveway and front yard were directionally felled into available openings within the existing canopy. Each tree was positioned to avoid neighboring trees, the driveway, and surrounding property while keeping the removal controlled from start to finish.
Result
A total of eight dead and declining trees were safely removed and cut into manageable sections.
The yard was raked and cleaned up, and the resulting brush and debris were consolidated in a designated area onsite for the homeowner to arrange for hauling herself.
