James River Shoreline Tree, Logs and Driftwood

Waterfront and wooded properties often require specialized maintenance to remain safe, accessible, and attractive throughout the year. Select Tree Removal LLC provides waterfront property cleanup, riverfront property cleanup, and waterfront storm cleanup services for homeowners dealing with overgrown vegetation, fallen trees, difficult access areas, and storm-related debris. We offer practical solutions designed to protect your property while preserving its natural character and abiding by Virginia regulations (Virginia Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act (CBPA) and local county ordinances).

All Things Wood and Water

Common services include tree removal near docks, removal of driftwood or logs near docks, shoreline brush removal, dock access clearing, trail clearing to water access, river access trail maintenance, and overgrown waterfront lot cleanup. We also assist property owners with waterfront storm cleanup, invasive vine removal, shoreline vegetation management, and clearing paths to rivers, ponds, and lakes. From improving waterfront views to restoring safe access after storms, Select Tree Removal helps maintain waterfront and wooded properties throughout the lower James River region.

  • Small Tree Removal Near Docks / Shorelines: Leaning or compromised trees along the water pose a constant threat to your marine investments. We specialize in precision low-impact felling and advanced rigging to safely bring down small to mid-size trees without risking damage to your docks, boat lifts, or bulkheads. Our targeted methods ensure limbs are controlled every step of the way, preventing heavy debris from crashing into the water or disrupting fragile shoreline soil.

  • Driftwood and Log Removal Near Docks / Shorelines: Floating debris, tidal drift, and submerged logs can quickly pin themselves against your dock pilings, creating massive structural strain and navigation hazards. Using specialized winching, mechanical advantage, and water-safe rigging, we carefully extract heavy driftwood from your waterfront area. We break down and remove these waterlogged liabilities before wave action or rising currents can cause costly damage to your waterfront infrastructure.

  • Waterfront Storm Cleanup: When severe weather strikes, waterfront properties often bear the brunt of the damage, leaving a chaotic mix of broken limbs, fallen trees, and tangled debris along the shore. We respond efficiently to stabilize the area, clear blocked boat slips, and mitigate further property damage. Our systematic cleanup process safely processes storm debris, separates salvageable wood, and restores safety and aesthetic beauty to your river frontage.

  • Trail Clearing & River Access Improvements: Overgrown brush, fallen logs, and low-hanging branches can completely cut off your access to the water and ruin your river view. We clear scenic pathways, reclaim overgrown shorelines, and remove underbrush to create safe, walkable access to your dock or beach area. By removing specific hidden tripping hazards while preserving beneficial root systems, we enhance your recreational space without accelerating shoreline erosion.

Protecting Your River Frontage

Protect your dock or river frontage from hazardous leaning trees or fallen logs before they make impact, otherwise we'll assist with the clean-up.

Our Advantage

Licensed & Insured Specialist: Operating high-powered equipment on your property carries inherent risk. As a fully insured owner-operator, I guarantee total property protection by executing every cut with precision. Because I focus exclusively on small-to-midsize trees, you get a highly specialized professional who treats your yard with the care it deserves, avoiding the heavy, turf-damaging trucks used by large-scale crews.

Knowledge of Waterfront Rigging Best Practices: Waterfront environments demand advanced mechanical advantage and technical skill. We know exactly which synthetic ropes, rigging blocks, and specialized knots to deploy to safely control felled timber near sensitive structures. Whether securing a winching anchor to pull a leaning tree away from a boat dock or extracting heavy logs out of the water, our advanced rigging ensures zero impact on your shoreline infrastructure.

Shoreline & River Frontage Protection: Overhanging limbs, leaning trunks, and shifting driftwood pose a direct threat to your docks, bulkheads, and water access. We specialize in low-impact ground felling and shoreline hazard reduction to neutralize liabilities before they cause costly structural damage. Our targeted approach preserves your critical river frontage view while protecting your marine investments from storm-damaged debris and erosion hazards.

Meticulous Site Clean-up: We respect your entire property from start to finish. Every project includes precise limb removal, trunk sectioning (bucking) to your preferred specifications, and organized debris sorting. We clean up the job site meticulously, ensuring your lawn, driveways, and waterfront areas are left completely clean, accessible, and free of hazardous tripping hazards or unsightly messes.

Low-Impact Services for Compliance With Environmental Codes: Large tree companies bring heavy trucks that violate RPA restrictions and tear up delicate shorelines. We understand the Virginia Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act guidelines. We use low-impact, specialized rigging to clear hazards legally, protect your riverfront view, and keep your property fully compliant with local county environmental codes.

Full Service Property Care: We combine proactive small tree removal, storm clean-up, and river frontage hazard reduction into a complete, hassle-free solution. By addressing problematic trees while they are small, we save you from the massive liabilities and extreme costs of large-scale crane removals later. From the first cut to the final site sweep, you receive dedicated, one-on-one professional attention tailored to your exact property goals.

Virginia Environmental Code Guidelines

Small Tree Removal (The "Hazard Tree" & "Vista" Rules):
  • Dead, Diseased, or Dying (DDD): Virginia law explicitly allows the removal of dead, structurally compromised, or diseased trees within the 100-foot buffer.

  • Sight Lines and Vistas: Homeowners are permitted to selectively prune or remove minor vegetation to create water views, provided the local government approves it and the root systems are left intact or replaced with low-growing native vegetation to prevent erosion.

  • Water-Dependent Structures: Tree removal is fully permitted when it directly threatens or interferes with water-dependent infrastructure like boat docks, piers, or bulkheads.

Driftwood & Log Removal (The Navigation & Structure Rules):
  • No Permit Needed for Loose Driftwood: If timber is floating, pinned by the tide against pilings, or washed up loosely on a beach, you can extract it without environmental permits.

  • The "Living Log" Exception: If a massive log has become deeply embedded in the mud and is actively stabilizing the shoreline or acting as established tidal wetlands, pulling it out with heavy machinery might require a Virginia Joint Permit Application (JPA) via the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).

    • Select Tree Removal LLC handles only loose or pinned hazards, nothing massive.

Trail Clearing & River Access (The Access Path Rule):
  • The CBPA explicitly allows homeowners to construct pedestrian access paths (such as trails or boardwalks) to reach their docks.

  • The Rule: The path must be designed to effectively control erosion.

    • Select Tree Removal LLC handles low-impact ground felling and underbrush clearing rather than heavy excavation to prevent the severe erosion that local inspectors look out for.

Local County Overlays (Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield):
  • Administrative Approvals: For minor shoreline tree removals or vista pruning, the homeowner usually just needs to submit a simple, free RPA Vegation Removal Application to their local county office (like Chesterfield County Environmental Engineering or Henrico Public Works).
